Black To Techno explores the origins of the genre in Detroit, correlating the industrial machine-like production lines of the city’s once-thriving automobile manufacturing legacy and the roots of black music in drum patterns and percussive shifts. Huckaby’s breakthrough musical efforts started in the mid-’90s and ultimately earned him critical acclaim as an international dance music producer. Nkiru has termed her amalgamation of artifacts – of archival film, music, and speech – as “cosmic archaeology,” which she defines as unearthing bits of information she finds and putting them back together. The film is directed by Kristian Hill and produced by Jennifer Washington, alongside Washington Hill Pictures. Detroit pioneer Derrick May is bringing his orchestral show to the Southbank Centre’s stunning Royal Festival Hall later this month.
