The larvae eat natural fibres like wool, fur and silk. Pantry Moth Pupa Stage will last 15 to 20 days. It’s the Clothes moth larvae, rather than the adult moths that are the culprits when it comes to damaging clothing and soft furnishings. The larval stage of clothes moths are creamy-white caterpillars up to 1/2-inch long. The moth larvae cause damage during feeding by actively eating natural fibres in garments, carpets, curtains and other soft furnishings. A family contains a great many species. Sometimes, the pupae will be in a nearby closet around clothing causing the pantry moth to be confused with a clothing moth. Clothes moths and pantry moths can be a real pest when they start eating your woollens and getting into your flour. However, the adults lay about 40-50 pinhead-sized eggs on vulnerable substrates, which in turn, hatch into the fabric-eating larvae. Pantry moths generally fly around in the evening and are attracted to lights. If you see a swarm of moths, it will likely be either clothing or pantry moths (pantry moth pictured here). Clothes moth adults do not feed so they cause no injury to fabrics. Moth pupae are no more than 1/3 of an inch long and may be as small as 1/4 inch. The clothing moth, otherwise called the wool worm, is ONE species of pantry moth. Pantry Moths Life Cycle – Adult Stage. Pantry moths constitute an entire superfamily of moths, called the Pyraloida.
